95 Express Lanes Have Immediate Impact

Posted on March 5, 2015 in: I-95 Express Lanes

Virginia’s 95 Express Lanes construction was an Alliance Priority to ease congestion and improve time-savings, reliability and choices for carpoolers, transit riders and single occupant users.

First month use numbers show that the 95 Express Lanes investment is paying off. More than 200,000 unique customers traveled on the 95 Express Lanes between Dec 29 and Jan 31, with average weekday trips just topping 37,000. And that number is predicted to grow.

HOV-3 and other exempt trips, who enjoy a toll-free trip at all hours of the day, constituted about 33% of weekday customers.

Providing travelers a choice, the 95 Express Lanes have improved trip times and conditions for all I-95 users between the Beltway and Stafford County. And those benefits extend on to the Beltway, with the 95 Express Lanes providing direct access to the 495 Express Lanes, easing traffic on that heavily used Beltway portion.

A recent editorial on Inside Nova about the 95 Express lanes highlighted commuters comments about the time savings they’ve experienced since the December opening of the lanes.
