The Alliance recognizes the importance of safe, well-connected pedestrian and bicycle travel.
The Alliance has long supported land use planning, including mixed use and transit oriented development, that promote walkability and bicycle use. Improved pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to the region’s Metro stations and to and within major activity centers are particularly important.
The National Capital Region estimates that about 11% of all daily trips and (4% of all commuting trips) in this area are by walking or bicycle. By 2040 these percentages are expected to increase to 14% and 6% respectively.
Safe, well-connected bicycle and pedestrian facilities are important to the quality of life of local communities and as a compliment to a comprehensive transportation network.
