Northern Virginia Transportation Coalition Urges General Assembly to Reinvest in Regional Transportation Network
With the recent start of the 2020 Virginia General Assembly Session, the Northern Virginia Transportation Business Coalition – a partnership consisting of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance and other regional business organizations representing the vast majority of Northern Virginia’s private sector businesses and employees – has issued a position paper calling on Virginia legislators to reinvest in Northern Virginia’s transportation network.
The Coalition’s policy statement calls for the Virginia General Assembly to dedicate new, sustainable revenue for Northern Virginia transportation improvements and invest those funds in the highway, transit, and intelligent transportation systems that will move the most people through our region, reduce congestion and travel time delays, increase network reliability, promote regional economic development and growth, and enhance national security.
Specific priorities include:
- Fully restoring regional transportation funds diverted from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority during the 2018 Session
- Creating new, sustainable transportation funding for the entire Commonwealth of Virginia
- Prioritizing regionally significant projects in key corridors that do the most to relieve congestion and reduce travel time delays
“Northern Virginia’s business community is united in the conviction that new, sustainable transportation dollars are essential to make the investments in our transportation network that will keep our region moving,” said Maggie Parker, Chair of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance. “We look forward to working with our elected officials this year to fully restore the money that was diverted from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and make other key investments for Virginia’s transportation future.”
The Coalition has shared its policy priorities with Northern Virginia’s local, state and federal elected officials and will continue advocating throughout the year to build a 21st century transportation network in Northern Virginia.
